Democracy University Vol. 3:

The Zinn/Terkel/Nader Video

I've just returned from videotaping Howard Zinn and Studs Terkel in Berkeley. They shared insights and anecdotes with the audience and with each other for an hour and 48 minutes, including a brief Q&A. The sound and picture are quite good, and I am very happy with how it came out. I will be happy to send you a copy of the video for your pledge to JusticeVision of $10 or more, to be sent in after you receive the videotape. You can order by email at [email protected] (this is our new address- the Juno address is no longer valid) or by telephone at (213) 747-6345. To order, please give us your mailing address, a telephone number for our records, and your pledge to send in a donation of $10 or more after you get the tape. Be sure you mention which tape you are requesting. Either "Terkel" or "DU3" (short for Democracy University Vol. 3) is sufficient. You can expect delivery in 2 weeks or less, probably less. In addition to the Terkel/Zinn event, the videotape will also include 9 other exceptional speeches related primarily to what to do about corporate domination of our culture and of the political process and about attempts to organize against it. Included is Ralph Nader's historic Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speech that we videotaped at the '96 Green Party Convention, that several told me was the best speech they had ever heard. The other speakers include Ronnie Dugger (who gives two speeches), Muriel Tillinghast, Democratic Congressman turned Green Dan Hamburg, Steve Hill of the Center for Voting and Democracy, anti-carcinogen activist Sherry Meddick, and Green Party municipal office holder Keiko Bonk. We are also including the 26 minute Nader Clearinghouse edit of our video of Nader's Acceptance Speech. The total time of the videotape is 6 hours and 6 minutes. We will be very happy to send along the earlier tapes in the Democracy University series if you would like, and will be happy to send their descriptions by email, if you do not have them already, upon request. Briefly, DU1 was the Berenson/Chomsky/Caldicott/Dugger video, and DU2 was the Korten/Clarke/Grossman/Zinn/Ivins video (on MAI and Corporations). Each is 6 hours long and requires you send a donation of $10 or more after you get them. Our goal through the Democracy University series is to make the very best progressive information and events accessible to everyone. If for any reason you are dissatisfied, please tell us and/or return it. If a tape is defective, notify us and we will send a replacement. As we've said in earlier announcements, traditional advertising would make us have to double or even triple our "price". We are only able to make these 6 hour tapes available for $10 because you, our supporters, are doing our "advertising" for us. Your efforts at passing this information to others is not only greatly appreciated, but is crucial to the success of this project, since to have an impact, we must be accessible to people in all economic categories. Thank you VERY much for your support and help. Sincerely, Ralph Cole, JusticeVision organizer [email protected], (213) 747-6345 FOOTNOTE: This message would not have reached you had it not been for those that took the time to pass it on to you. I know they would appreciate your thanks and maybe a small donation (perhaps $1 to each to compensate them a little for their time and effort) if you care to show your appreciation in that manner, whether or not you choose to order the video tape. In case I am unable to fill your order promptly for some reason (like I get overwhelmed with orders or something), you should wait until your tape arrives. (Although I am always appreciative of donations, if my name is included it is merely as a place holder to start off the list, and should be considered as such.) REMINDER: your $10 pledged donation for the videotape itself is to be sent to Justicevision AFTER we send you the videotape in the mail (to avoid misunderstandings we prefer that you do not pay in advance). Thank you gifts to the following list are optional; they are separate from the pledge and can only be in addition to it, since they do not help to pay the cost of making the 6-hour Democracy University videotape and sending to you. Michael Stec 2131 Westmount Rd NW Calgary,AB Canada T2N 3N3 VOLUNTEER INCENTIVE PLAN: I devised this plan in the hope that it will enable me to focus on making tapes instead of on getting orders. My thinking is that the same thing that motivates people to donate for a tape they have already received will motivate many of them to send something to those that brought them the information, as well. To participate in the volunteer incentive plan, add your (or your organization's) name and address in space 5 and move everybody else up one (dropping the name at the top). Then fax, email, snail mail, post, or whatever, this entire message anywhere it is not inappropriate to do so. Please use discretion and be careful not to post or send it where it is going to bother or offend someone. Fresh and/or updated copies of the body of this letter will be emailed upon request (specify the DU#2 letter). If you do get a fresh copy from me, be sure to paste in the volunteer list you received (revising it to include you, of course). Suggestions for revisions would be appreciated and will be considered. You do not have to order the tape to participate in the volunteer incentive plan. Thank you very much for volunteering. I have no idea how this is going to work, or what to expect. I just hope Margaret Mead is not disappointed, wherever she is. I hope the incentive plan succeeds in providing our volunteers with a just and/or sustaining compensation for there contributed time and effort. Please share your experience with me from time to time. Thank you very much for joining in the effort to make Democracy University a success!
